Shochu is distilled liquor especially popular in Kyushu.
Yakushima's shochu is made primarily from sweet potatoes grown on the island, giving it a distinctly earthy, slightly smoky character compared to mainland varieties. The Densho Gura distillery, founded by the Hombo Company in 1960, draws on Yakushima's exceptionally clean mountain water to produce its spirits, and the difference in quality is something the distillers will happily explain on a guided tour of the facility. After the walk-through, the shop offers tastings covering the full range, including sangria and whiskey made from local ingredients alongside the main shochu lineup. It is a short stop but one that connects the island's environment directly to something you can taste.
