Wakkanai Port North Breakwater Dome
landmark
稚内港北防波堤ドーム
An arched Romanesque breakwater at the northern edge of Japan.
Designed by a 26-year-old engineer in 1931, this unique semi-arched breakwater protected the former ferry terminal to Sakhalin from harsh northern waves. With 70 pillars stretching 427 meters, its architecture resembles an ancient Greek temple. It is a powerful monument to the region's history as a gateway between Japan and the Russian Far East.
