津和野太皷谷稲成神社
Major Inari shrine reached through 1,000 vermilion torii gates in a San'in mountain castle town.
One of Japan's five major Inari shrines, reached by climbing through a tunnel of approximately 1,000 vermilion torii gates up a forested hillside in the castle town of Tsuwano. The shrine uses the rare character 'inari' meaning 'become' rather than the standard 'inari' meaning 'rice,' reflecting a unique prayer tradition. Views from the top encompass the entire valley.
