Tokoura-jinja is a Shinto shrine built by Ura Munekatsu (1526–1592), also known as Nomi Munekatsu, a naval commander for the powerful Kobayakawa warlord family.
Tokoura Shrine was built by Ura Munekatsu, a naval commander for the Kobayakawa warlord family in the sixteenth century. Its large torii gate was originally erected in the sea at Tadanoumi before being relocated to the shore. When Munekatsu began building Kagi Castle on the adjacent 20-meter hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, he moved the shrine to its present position. The hillside temple of Shounji served as part of the castle's coastal defenses. The castle grounds are now a park, and Tokoura Shrine hosts a popular festival near Tadanoumi Station each April.
