大阪城
Revered castle dating to 1597 & since rebuilt, featuring gardens & a museum with varied exhibits.
One of Japan's most iconic landmarks, Osaka Castle was built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a statement of power during Japan's unification wars. The current main tower, a 1931 concrete reconstruction, houses an eight-floor museum tracing Hideyoshi's dramatic rise and fall, with an observation deck offering panoramic city views from the top. The massive stone walls and wide moats remain from the original fortress, with some foundation stones weighing over 100 tons. The Kokubukan site within the grounds marks where Hideyoshi's son Hideyori made his last stand against Tokugawa forces in 1615. The surrounding park is one of Osaka's premier cherry blossom spots, with over 3,000 trees blooming in early April along the Nishinomaru Garden and castle moats. The Gokurakubashi Bridge offers the classic photo angle. Budget extra time if visiting during hanami season.
