The Naval Arsenal Engineer Training School and the Naval Arsenal Factory Worker Training School were both instrumental in securing Kure’s legacy in naval technology and construction.
Two stone monuments on a slope east of Mt. Kushi in Kure mark the former sites of the Naval Arsenal's training schools, which produced the engineers who built the battleship Yamato, the largest warship ever constructed. The skills cultivated here gave Kure's shipbuilding industry a foundation that helped the city recover quickly after the war, pivoting to commercial vessels including some of the largest oil tankers in the world. Higher up the slope, the steps and platform of a former arsenal shrine remain alongside abandoned concrete wartime structures, including an observation post, a pillbox, and ventilation shafts connected to an underground bunker.
