Edo-era merchant lanes with deep machiya townhouses, now home to tea rooms and brush artisans.
Naramachi is Nara's beautifully preserved old merchant quarter, a maze of narrow lanes lined with traditional machiya townhouses that have been thoughtfully repurposed into cafes, craft shops, sake bars, and small museums. Several former residences are open to the public as house museums, giving you a glimpse into the daily lives of Edo-period merchants, complete with deep, narrow floor plans designed to minimize taxable street frontage. Look for the small red monkey charms (migawari-zaru) hanging from the eaves of many houses, traditional talismans believed to ward off misfortune. The neighborhood is best explored on foot, wandering without a fixed route, and it pairs perfectly with a morning visit to nearby Nara Park and its friendly deer.
