Youngest volcano in a monogenetic field on Fukue Island in the Goto archipelago, formed in an eruption about 18,000 years ago. Its conical, grass-covered summit is a local landmark, visible from Fukue Port. The treeless slopes exist because residents conduct controlled burns every three years to prevent regrowth and encourage mountain grasses and wildflowers, including Siebold's lily and Japanese gentian. The hike to the top is relatively straightforward, with an observation area midway offering views of surrounding peaks and the sea. At night the summit is used for stargazing, and in May an annual festival celebrates traditional baramon kite flying here.
