shrine
紀州東照宮
Lavishly lacquered 1621 Toshogu shrine overlooking Wakanoura Bay, called the Nikko of Kansai.
Called the "Nikko of Kansai," this ornately lacquered Toshogu shrine overlooks Wakanoura Bay from a hillside accessed by a steep stone staircase of 108 steps. Built in 1621 to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, the polychrome carvings and gold leaf rival the famous Nikko original but see a tiny fraction of visitors. The hilltop terrace offers panoramic views over the bay that has inspired poets since the Man'yoshu era.
