Hinokinaigawa-Tsutsumi Park can be found along the banks of the Hinokinaigawa River.
Along the banks of the Hinokinaigawa River in Kakunodate, roughly 400 cherry trees form a two-kilometer stretch that was planted in the spring of 1934 to mark the birth of Emperor Emeritus Akihito. Selected in 1990 as one of Japan's 100 Best Spots for Cherry Blossoms, the park draws 1.3 million visitors each season and holds Scenic Beauty designation from the Agency for Cultural Affairs. The Hinokinaigawa River originates in the Takasaki forest of northern Akita before flowing south past the town. Its clean, clear waters also attract anglers who come for sweetfish, known locally as ayu; fishing permits are available at nearby shops.
