Himeji Castle Garden Koko-en
castle
好古園
Nine Edo-style gardens beside Himeji Castle, overlooked by most visitors heading to the main keep.
Built in 1992 on the site of former samurai residences beside Himeji Castle, nine connected Edo-style gardens re-create different historical garden traditions, from tea ceremony gardens to cascading waterfalls and bamboo groves. Most visitors head straight for the castle and miss Koko-en entirely, leaving its winding paths remarkably quiet. The Kassui-ken restaurant inside the garden serves matcha overlooking a carp pond.
